Badlands terrain park gets a facelift

If you’ve driven by Blue Mountain this fall you might have noticed some big changes in our Badlands terrain park. Over the fall, the parks and operations team have been moving earth and working on upgrades in preparation for the 2012/13 winter season. As part of the project, the team has bulldozed the long-standing dirt form for the superpipe. But it’s not leaving for long!

With the purchase of our new Zaugg Pipe Cutter in 2011, we’re now able to extend the walls of the superpipe to 18’ or 22’. Walls of this size didn’t work so well in the old dirt form, so the decision was made to shape a new, all-snow superpipe for the 2012/13 season. The new superpipe will leverage the Zaugg’s full capabilities, and will be steeper, longer and made 100% of snow. In short, it will be the best pipe Blue Mountain has ever seen.

Once built, the superpipe will also be in a new location on the south end of the terrain park (beside the Apple Bowl trail). This change in location creates more space for the creation of new jump and rail lines. With emphasis on progression, a new fleet of rails will be installed, with some old favourites returning, to create a whole new riding experience this season.

This year’s changes are the beginning of a multi-year plan to improve the Badlands and Greatest Hits terrain park areas. To make the upgrades possible, Blue Mountain has also added new snowmaking lines and guns – so, once temperatures drop to -2°C, we can use new high-temperature guns to blast the park with more snow than ever before.

These new changes will truly make Badlands one of the best terrain parks east of the Rockies and a world-class venue for this season’s events. Just another reason to purchase your Blue Mountain Season Pass before the Early Bird deadline ends at 11:59 p.m. on November 1, 2012.
