The Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Reserve is a 725-km-long ridge, that spans from New York through Ontario to Wisconsin. The Ontario portion stretches from Lake Ontario, near Niagara Falls, to the tip of the Bruce Peninsula, between Georgian Bay and Lake Huron.
More than 450 million years old, the Escarpment is one of the world’s most magnificent natural landforms. It makes up almost one-quarter of Ontario’s Greenbelt and is home to Canada’s longest footpath, the Bruce Trail. As one of the last remaining bands of continuous forest cover and natural heritage linkages in Southern Ontario, it provides vital habitat for numerous species at risk and is the source of many of the Greater Golden Horseshoe’s major river systems.
The Bruce Trail is Canada's oldest and longest marked footpath, spanning over 890 km of main trail and 400+ km of side trails along the Niagara Escarpment from Niagara to Tobermory. It is a premier hiking destination designated as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, offering scenic views, forests, and waterfalls.
The Bruce Trail Conservancy plays a crucial role in protecting and preserving one of Canada’s irreplaceable natural wonders – the Niagara Escarpment. By providing an opportunity to explore the Escarpment, the Bruce Trail has introduced thousands of people to its diverse landscapes, its unique geology, and its biological treasures. And as one of Ontario’s largest land trusts, the Bruce Trail Conservancy protects and cares for Escarpment ecosystems
A great way to start the day is with a trek along one of Blue Mountain’s hiking trails. Trails range in length and difficulty but there's something for everyone. Whether you're just warming up your hiking legs or want easy access to trails without leaving the resort, the Explore Park is a great place to break trail.
